Cai Guo-Qiang: October Pushkin State Museum of Fine Arts, Moscow September 13–November 12, 2017 Role: Producer & Project Manager, Cai Guo-Qiang Studio Presented by the Pushkin State Museum of Fine Arts in Moscow, October was Cai Guo-Qiang’s first solo exhibition in Russia. Created on the occasion of the October Revolution’s centenary, the exhibition contains a series of bold new works created on-site in collaboration with local residents. The participatory creation process and the exhibition offer a space to reflect on the role of individuals in history and the relationship between individual dreams and collective ideals. Highlights include Autumn, a 50-foot-high installation of baby cradles and birch trees transforming the museum’s entrance; three 65-foot-long gunpowder paintings created at the historical site of VDNH (All-Russian Exhibition Center) with the participation of hundreds of local residents; and an immersive installation of crop circles hidden with symbols that become visible in reflection in the mirror overhead. The exhibition was accompanied by a bilingual catalog and a feature-length documentary film.
