Cai Guo-Qiang: Elegy Daytime fireworks realized on the riverfront of the Power Station of Art, Shanghai, August 8, 2014, at 5:00 p.m. Approximately 8 minutes. Commissioned by the Power Station of Art, Shanghai [Ephemeral] Role: project and on-site assistant Elegy was the renowned artist Cai Guo-Qiang's first large-scale daytime pyrotechnic display in Mainland China. Conceived in three chapters—Elegy, Remembrance, and Consolation—and lasting eight minutes, this ceremonial explosion event portrayed the image of nature in decline. Reflecting the themes of the exhibition Cai Guo-Qiang: The Ninth Wave, this site-specific, ephemeral work utilized environmentally safe, food-grade ingredients for the colored smoke pyrotechnic effects.
